What it is?

A simple, evidence-based mindfulness activity that helps individuals reduce stress, improve emotional regulation, and refocus attention by engaging all five senses. This activity can be done seated or standing, independently or in a group, and takes 2 to 5 minutes.

How does it work?

Participants pause and identify:

see

5

things they can see

see

4

things they can touch

see

3

things they can hear

see

2

things they can smell

see

1

thing they can taste

Why does it matter?

Grounding techniques help calm the nervous system and are shown to reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm. This activity is especially helpful for individuals experiencing pain, fatigue, cognitive overload, or worry.

Why is it perfect for outpatient therapy?

PT: It supports breath awareness, posture, and body awareness

OT: It develops emotional regulation, routines, and coping strategies
